NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
England staged a phenomenal performance to open up a 16-shot lead at the end of the qualifying stage of the European senior team championship at the Sporting Club, Berlin.

England sailed into the championship matchplay flight as top seeds, 16 shots ahead of France, 18 ahead of Germany and 32 ahead of fourth-placed Sweden.

In an excellent team performance, every one of the six England players scored in the 70s in the second qualifying round. They enjoyed the luxury of being able to discount a 79 – a score which many teams would have been pleased to count.

On a day when the course again played wet and very long – with preferred lies in use – four members of the team returned three-over 75, one shot 77 and the sixth scored 79.

Team captain Sue Westall said: “We have had a phenomenal day and everyone has been very clinical and very professional – they just went out there and did their job. Now the matchplay begins and everyone is raring to go.”

Tomorrow’s quarter finals are: England v Spain, France v Ireland, Germany v Scotland, Sweden v Switzerland.
England scores
