JANICE MOODIE 71, CATRIONA MATTHEW 74 IN ROUND 1

HSBC LPGA Brasil Cup 2010
Itanhanga Golf Club
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The second-annual HSBC LPGA Brasil Cup 2010 is off-and-running with Sweden’s Maria Hjorth leading the pack after 18 holes of play with a five-under-par round of 68.
Hjorth, who was 2-over-par through three holes this morning, rebounded with seven birdies from holes four to 12 to take a share off the lead in the early afternoon. She holds a one-shot advantage over Meaghan Francella and Mariajo Uribe, both on 69.
Uribe, a rookie of the 2010 LPGA Tour, hails from Colombia and earned a sponsor’s exemption into the HSBC LPGA Brasil Cup 2010. The 2007 U.S. Amateur champ, she is looking for his first professional victory this weekend.
Meaghan Francella aced the par-3 10th hole with a 6-iron from 161 yards to help propel her to the top of the leaderboard during the first round of the HSBC LPGA Brasil Cup 2010. Francella, a fourth-year Tour member, is tied for second with Mariajo Uribe with 18 holes remaining at Itanhanga Golf Club in Rio de Janeiro. Francella’s only other ace came in a collegiate event at Bryan Park in Greensboro, North Carolina with the same 6-iron she used today.
Glasgow-born Janice Moodie had a two-under-par 71.
A three-over-par 76 was not exactly what Sao Paulo native Angela Park hoped for in the first round of the HSBC LPGA Brasil Cup 2010, but she is not discouraged.
“It was tough,” said Park. “Golf is always tough. There’s always tomorrow. I’ll work on a couple things on the range tonight and tomorrow will be a better day. It’s a great blessing (to be treated so well by the fans in Brazil). I’m so grateful for it.”
Park finished third at the inaugural event last season and currently sits tied for 19th entering Sunday’s final round.
Defending champion Catriona Matthew is tied for 13th at one-over-par 74… Maria Laura Elvira, a member of the Duramed FUTURES Tour, is tied for 19th at 3-over-par 76… Several players are visiting the famous Christ the Redeemer statue, which overlooks Rio de Janiero, tonight

Record-breaker Reid leads

Ladies Slovak Open

FROM THE LADIES' EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
England’s Melissa Reid fired a course record seven under par 65 in wet conditions to take a one stroke lead after the third round of the Allianz Ladies Slovak Open today.
Reid, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, reached eight under par 208 for the tournament at Gray Bear Golf Club despite heavy rain and weather delays due to electrical storms in the area.
England’s Laura Davies led by two shots after completing her second round of 67 at 6.30am on Saturday morning and moved five ahead of the field after five holes in her third round. However Reid moved ahead with seven birdies, two bogeys and an eagle on her score card.
Australian rookie Kristie Smith carded a 67 to finish one shot off the pace in second with Maria Hernandez taking a 69, in third at six-under-par.
Reid, who won her first professional title three weeks ago in Turkey and was a runner-up to Davies in Germany a fortnight ago, finished strongly, rolling in a 15-footer for eagle at the par-five 18th hole.
“It was nice to finish with an eagle. I had five under on the front nine and that kind of gets the ball rolling,” said the 22-year-old Derbyshire player. “I knew if I just made a couple of birdies on the back nine then it was going to be a pretty good score. I got off to a really good start.
“It’s one of those courses where you’ve got to completely use your imagination and you’ve just got to feel everything so I think the girls are coming around to it and having a bit of fun out there, which is good.”
“Obviously it’s nice to have won and to have finished second in Germany. It kind of gets the ball rolling and gives you that confidence. It’s a nice confidence and I hope to keep it going. Another 65 would be nice.”
Smith, 21, from Perth, West Australia, has won twice already this season, on the ALPG Tour in Australia and on the Duramed Futures Tour in America. She was delighted to be in contention to win her first Ladies European Tour event and said: “I feel like I have a really good chance to win this week. I feel that the golf course really suits my game.
“I’ve had a couple of wins this year and the first one shooting nine under in the last round. That was nice and I know I definitely can do it. To be not leading going into the last round calms the nerves a little bit too.”
She added that her father, professional golfer Wayne Smith, had been a great support. “Dad’s been the biggest influence of my career. He’s helped me a lot to get to where I am now.”
At five under par after a 68, Gwladys Nocera is three shots off the lead but could pose a threat. The 10-time Ladies European Tour winner is hungry for a victory, with her last win in 2008.
“It’s a position I like: just a few behind. We will see tomorrow; it’s another day and with the weather we don’t know what’s going to happen,” Nocera said. “The ball is not flying much and it doesn’t roll anywhere. You have to take into consideration everything and just be patient. It rained so much this afternoon that it rained on 11, 12, 13, which are tough holes and I tried to keep patient and wait for the sun to come.”
The Ladies European Tour’s Henderson Money List leader, Davies, carded a 76 to share fifth with South African Ashleigh Simon (73) at three under par, while Pernilla Lindberg from Sweden had a 75 and slipped back to two under.
The final round will take place from a two-tee start on Sunday with tee-times from 8am - 9.50am.

St RULE TROPHY FIRST-ROUND REPORT AND SCORES

Pamela Pretswell, has played little competitive golf since last September (Cal Carson Agency image).

Pamela Pretswell shows Curtis Cup class to lead with a 70

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Glasgow University student Pamela Pretswell from Hamilton, one of only two Scots in the Great Britain and Ireland team for the Curtis Cup match against the United States from June 11 to 13 at Essex County Club, Massachusetts, showed her class by leading the star-studded St Rule Trophy international field over the New Course, St Andrews today.
Pamela, a Bothwell Castle Golf Club member, who has played little competitive golf since last Septemer’s home internationals at Irvine due to university examinations - she missed the Scottish women's championship the week before last - shot a five-under-par 70 to lead by one stroke from repeating Welsh champion Tara Davies (Holyhead) and last year’s Australian champion, Justine Lee.
There is a two-stroke gap between the first three and the three home-grown Scots who are joint fourth on the 73 mark – Jacqueline Sneddon (Alyth), home for the summer holidays from Grand Canyon University, Arizona, former Scottish champion and now international team selector Martine Pow (Selkirk) and Alford’s Laura Murray, who reached the semi-finals of the Scottish women’s amateur championship at Craigielaw a week or so ago.
Julie Yang, the South Korean-born 14-year-old pupil at Loretto School, Musselburgh, is one of a group on 74. Julie won the Welsh open amateur stroke-play, finished second in the German women’s equivalent and then gained a top-30 finish in the Ladies European Tour event, the German Ladies Open – all earlier this month.
Curtis Cup first reserve Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar), who, eight days ago, added the Scottish women's title to the Scottish Under-21 crown she has held for the past two years, matched the par of 75 to be in joint 13th position overnight. The "Scottish"-St Rule Trophy double has been achieved in the past - but not often. Beaten finalist Louise Kenney (Pitreavie) had a 77.
The leading Irish player is Gillian O'Leary from Cork on 77.
There is no cut in this tournament which ends on Sunday with two rounds over the Old Course, St Andrews.
Previous winners of this prestigious event include Annika Sorenstam and Catriona Matthew.
*Sally Watson, a student at Stanford University, California, is the other Scot in the Curtis Cup squad of eight. She is going straight to Essex County Club from California this coming week.
