Louise MacGregor wins Stirling & Clackmannan title for first time

Falkirk Golf Club member Louise MacGregor, playing over her home course, won the Stirling & Clackmannan women's county golf championship for the first time tonight.
It was the first time that Louise, the No 2 seed, had ever reach the last stage of the county championship but she showed no sign of nerves in winning by 5 and 4 against the No 8 seed and county captain Linda Allan (Falkirk Tryst).
MacGregor, who celebrated her 21st birthday last week, never looked back after winning the first and third holes for an early two-hole lead. She built steadily on that platform.
Allan, champion in 2006 and playing in the final for the fifth time, never got into the game with a chance.
Result:
Final - Louise MacGregor (Falkirk) bt Linda Allan (Falkirk Tryst) 5 and 4.

SCOTTISH SCHOOLGIRLS JULIE AND CARLY BEAT

THE CUT IN THE GERMAN LADIES OPEN

Fourteen-year-old Loretto Golf Academy pupil Julie Yang is among the four Scottish-based qualifiers after 36 holes of the Ladies European Tour's German Ladies Open, played so far in miserable conditions of cold and rain at Munich today.
Julie, of South Korean extraction, has been a student at the Musselburgh establishment since September, having arrived via Phoenix, Arizona but it is only now that she is beginning to make her mark outwith the college circuit.
Two weeks ago she won the Welsh women's open amateur stroke-play championship and last weekend she was pipped on the post for the German women's open amateur title at Dusseldorf.
That performance gained her a place in the German Ladies Open and, after rounds of 71 and 73 for a level par 144, Julie is lying in joint 25th place, 10 shots behind the leader, Sweden's Linda Wessberg with rounds of 70 and a career-low 64.
Julie is the only amateur to survive the two-round cut, thus gaining a measure of revenge on the leading French player Lucie Andre who pipped her over the last round of the German amateur title but failed to survive the cut in Munich.
Carly Booth is another Scottish schoolgirl through to the weekend action. The 17-year-old Glenalmond pupil has had rounds of 70 and 75 for 145. The rookie pro from Comrie has quickly developed the knack of surviving cuts which is an encouraging sign at this stage of her career.
Carly is joint 33rd alongside Lynn Kenny (Archerfield Links) with rounds of 76 and 69 for 145. They survived the cut with a shot to spare.
Fifer Krystle Caithness, who now lives at Cupar, produced a splendid second-round 69 (36-33) to settle any doubts about surviving the cut after an opening 74. She is in joint 19th place on 143.
Five Scots are now on the sidelines. Vikki Laing (Kings Acre Golf Academy) missed out with rounds of 74 and 76 for 150 while Majorca-based amateur Lauren Mackin had scores of 78 and 74 for 152.
Rookie pro Kylie Walker, now playing out of The Carrick at Loch Lomond, shot 77 and 76 for 153, the same aggregate as Ayrshire's Pamela Feggans (78-75).
Clare Queen (The Carrick at Loch Lomond) had scores of 78 and 77 for 155, missing the cut by nine strokes.

It's Hayley Davis v Tara Watters for English championship

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Dorset’s Hayley Davis delighted local supporters when she reached the final of the English amateur championship at Broadstone, in her home county. She plays Tara Watters of Middlesex who is in the final for the second successive year.
This is Hayley’s first appearance in the championship but she was confident she could make a good showing.
“I’ve been playing well and I felt I could reach the final. Now I shall give it my best shot,” said the 17-year-old, who is an England girl international and the Dorset champion. She beat Gloucestershire’s Charlotte Ellis in a very tight match. Only one hole separated the two players for most of the round and the lead changed hands a number of times.
Hayley struck a crucial blow when she birdied the short 15th to go two up and after the next two holes were halved - in birdie, par – she was through to the final. “I look a little while to settle at the start of the match but I played well later on when I needed to,” she said.
Earlier in the day Hayley beat Lancashire’s Nikki Foster in the quarter-finals.
Tara Watters enjoys this championship but she had to pinch herself to believe she was in the final again.
“I can’t believe I’ve done it again, I thought the field was a lot stronger this year,” she said.
She claimed her place with a convincing 6 and 4 win over Curtis Cup selection Hannah Barwood. Tara was on sparkling form, winning the first three holes of the match and reaching the turn in three-under par. Steady play – and her excellent short game – brought her victory on the 14th. “The pressure was definitely off me,” said Tara. “I was the underdog while Hannah is the England international and Curtis Cup player. So I could just relax and try and play my normal game.
“But even when I had a good lead I had to keep focused. I won a match yesterday after being four down at one stage – so I knew Hannah could come back at me. I had to keep going. I do like this championship and this course is fantastic. It’s my kind of course.”
Earlier, in the quarter-finals, Tara beat England international Kelly Tidy of Lancashire. Meanwhile Charlotte Ellis defeated Curtis Cup selection Rachel Jennings, while Hannah Barwood beat Buckinghamshire’s Rachel Drummond.

Backing in pipeline for Catriona Matthew

FROM THE SPORT.SCOTSMAN.COM WEBSITE
By MARTIN DEMPSTER
Catriona Matthew's manager is confident the North Berwick golfer will have strong corporate support behind her when she defends the Ricoh Women's British Open title at Royal Birkdale this summer.
Vicky Cuming, who works for IMG and also looks after the interests of Sam Torrance, was responding to Matthew expressing her disappointment over the lack of backing she'd received since becoming the first Scot to win a women's major last year.
While admitting the situation was "crazy" given what the 40-year-old had achieved at Royal Lytham – she beat a world-class field to lift the title just 11 weeks after giving birth to her second daughter – Cuming said it was simply down to tough financial times.
She said that Matthew, who has played most of her professional golf on the lucrative LPGA Tour in America, had secured one sponsorship in the shape of a bag deal with Golf Live and is hopeful two more backers will be on board in the near future – in time for the Scot's defence of the Ricoh title in Southport at the end of July.
"It has been frustrating for all of us and it is crazy really when you think about what Catriona has achieved," said Cuming. "But, to be honest, it is a reflection of how tight things are at the moment. I was out in Germany (at a Ladies' European Tour event] this week and I was talking to one player who said she did not know a single girl out there who had any sponsorship whatsoever.
"In representing Golf Live, Catriona has one new sponsor (since last year] and I am very hopeful about one or two other things that are in the pipeline. We don't look at Catriona as being someone who can only be sponsored by Scottish companies. She is a global brand and I am confident she will have a good corporate team around her by the time the Ricoh Women's British Open comes around."
According to Cuming, ladies' golf struggles to match the sponsorship levels generated in the men's game due to the fact it doesn't get the same profile.
"People question what they are going to get from it (putting money into ladies' golf]," she said, adding that one area where Matthew has become more popular as a major champion is corporate days.
"Companies believe they get value for money from these events," said Cuming.
Kevin Craggs, who recently took over from Florida-based Dave Whelan as Matthew's swing coach, said he found it hard to believe that she hadn't attracted a queue of potential sponsors – and not just because of a major win.
"For someone of Catriona's calibre and ability not to have a sponsor is sad," said Craggs, who saw at close quarters the influence Matthew has on the young Scottish players trying to follow in her footsteps when she accompanied a squad to Desert Spring in Spain earlier this year for a training camp organised by the SLGA.
"The fact that Scottish golf has someone of Catriona's stature is fantastic," added Craggs who, during a five-year stint as the SLGA's national coach, has established a strong working knowledge of the ladies' game.
"She's been a top professional for more than ten years and what she achieved last year was amazing. She had a colourful amateur career and was has been a great ambassador for the organisation (the SLGA]. She was at Desert Spring with us and really took to her mentoring role – she was fantastic.
"Quite frankly, I've seen the girls take a completely different look at the way they go about their business, both in terms of practice and also expectations – and that's as a result of Catriona's influence."

Loretto Golf Academy's narrow win over East Lothian boys

REPORT OF EAST LOTHIAN v LORETTO GOLF ACADEMY
A very enjoyable and competitive match was played at Dunbar on Tuesday evening between a select team from East Lothian and the high profile Loretto Golf Academy. The course was in good condition despite the obvious effects of the recent storms and some good golf was on display at the different age groups.
Both sides were missing a few of their top players (eg Julie Yang warming up for the Ladies European Tour German Open and Grant Forrest studying for exams ) but both teams proved their strength in depth with Loretto's international squad coming out on top, albeit only on the last green of the last match for a 3 1/2-2 1/2 victory.
Anthony Blaney put in a solid performance alongside debutant Peter Legget, sneaking a win for East Lothian in the top match with a sterling 25ft putt on the testing final hole, with the Gullane pairing having been behind all the way.
Sami Bouzabia and Alexander Wilson were also pleased to take the scalp of Scottish Academy players Callum Hill and Euan Bowden.
Results:
East Lothians names first
Under 18
Anthony Blaney (Gullane ) & Peter Legget (Gullane) bt George Munsey & Timon Sitte 1 hole.
Ewen Donaldson (Craigielaw ) & Blair Shearer (Dunbar ) lost to Peter Templeton & James Sharp 2 and 1.
Under 16
Calum Hill (Tantallon ) & Euan Bowden (Tantallon ) lost to Sami Bouzabia & Alexander Wilson 2 holes.
Calum Satterley (Longniddry ) & Oli Duffy (Craigielaw) lost to Ian Mcdowall & Tim Huebner 1 hole.
Under 14
Neil Bowden (Glen) & Chris Algeo (Longniddry) bt John Dunn Butler & George Sutherland 6 and 5.
Finn Donaldson (North Berwick) & Gary Brownlee (Tantallon ) halved with Laura Alexander & Migle Rusteikaite
Result East Lothian 2 1/2 Loretto 3 1/2
From a Gullane perspective it was great to have six members spread between the two sides. Peter Legget got his first taste of representative action, playing his part in the top game. Alexander Wilson makes his debut for Lothian Boys on Sunday v Perth & Kinross.
Thanks to Dunbar for the use of their fine course - the venue of next year's Scottish boys' championship where Craigielaw player Grant Forrest will be looking to defend his crown.

LPGA TOUR AT MOBILE, ALABAMA

Azahara (65) leads, Janice Moodie
-
joint fourth on 67

Last year's British women's open amateur champion Azahara Munoz from Spain shot a seven-under-par 65 to take a one-stroke lead over Katherine Hull and Jee Young Lee in the Bell Micro LPGA Classic.
Munoz, who played four years on the US women's college circuit as an Arizona State University student and won the 2008 NCAA individual title, had a bogey-free round on The Crossings Course at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail's Magnolia Grove complex, Mobile in Alabama.
"This morning I couldn't get up," said Munoz, pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency, who had a 6:50 a.m. tee time off the 10th tee. "But once I'm up and I get going, it's fine."
Glasgow's Janice Moodie, Cristie Kerr, Meena Lee, and Hye Jung Choi shot 67s, and Suzann Pettersen, Eunjung Yi, Sun Young Yoo and Amanda Blumenherst opened with 68s.
Jiyai Shin, No. 1 in the world ranking following Lorena Ochoa's retirement two weeks ago after the Tres Marias Championship in Mexico, had a 70.
Japanese star Ai Miyazato, the Tres Marias winner for her third victory in the first five events this season, also opened with a 70. Michelle Wie shot a 72.
The tournament wasn't played in 2009 because of course renovation work. In September 2008 at Magnolia Grove, Angela Stanford beat Shanshan Feng by a stroke. Stanford shot a 70 on Thursday.
Munoz hit every fairway and missed only one green in regulation -- on No. 11 when she holed out of a greenside bunker for her first birdie of the round.
"I was playing really well," said Munoz, making her second LPGA Tour start of the year and fifth overall. "Actually, a lot of putts didn't go in, but every putt I hit had a chance."
The 2009 Women's British Amateur champion at Harlech in Wales tied for 31st at Tres Marias, opening with a 65, then adding rounds of 76, 79 and 69.
"The first round (at Tres Marias), I just went out there and played normal and I played really well, like today," she said. "Then the second round, I started thinking of my swing. That was a big mistake, because that course is very technical.
"Obviously, I was disappointed after a great first round, but I think I learned a lot. I have to stay in the present, one shot at a time."
Hull, from Australia, had seven birdies and a bogey.
"I made a really stupid bogey on 11 (her second hole), so it kind of ticked me off," Hull said. "After that, I was like, `Right, game on. It got me fired up.'"
Kerr was pleased with her 68.
"Any time you're shooting in the 60s and lower you're doing a lot of stuff right," Kerr said. "This is only the first day of the tournament."
Mhairi McKay, the second Scot in the field, had a disappointing 78.
