Rachel wins Shire girls' medal
-
at Kemnay with a scratch 76

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Rachel Polson, a five-handicap member of Peterculter Golf Club, shot a gross 76 (three over par) at Kemnay Golf Club today to win the top scratch prize in the Aberdeenshire girls' medal in a cold breeze and sometimes wet conditions.
Rachel, pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency, birdied the second and the long seventh on her way to matching the par of 37 for the outward half. Her bogeys before the turn were the shot sixth and the long eighth.
Coming home Rachel dropped shots at three more par-3s - the 10th, the 14th and 18th.
Second best scratch score was a 79 by Claire Prouse (Hazlehead) and third was professional's daughter, Kristina Vannet (Peterculter) with an 80.
Best net return in a field reduced to 16 players by illness and injury was a 67 by Olivia Borwick (McDonald Ellon) off a handicap of 16.

Turkish triumph is Melissa Reid's first pro victory

FROM THE LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
By BETHAN CUTLER
England’s Melissa Reid finally entered the winner’s circle today with a two-stroke victory at the Turkish Airlines Ladies Open.
The charismatic blonde, 23, from Derby, played with poise and authority at National Golf Club in Belek, Antalya to close with a 74 and finish at three under par 216 over the par-73 lay-out , ahead of Denmark’s Iben Tinning (74) and Christel Boeljon from the Netherlands (72).
It was a significant win against a field of competitors that included Laura Davies who became the Ladies European Tour’s oldest ever winner at the Pegasus New Zealand Women’s Open in February, aged 46.
Reid looked like heir apparent to Davies as Britain’s best golfer as she said: “I’m very, very happy to be standing here with the trophy.”
“It wasn’t easy. I played really well on the front nine and didn’t do much wrong: I hit one bad shot and the back nine took its toll on me. I think I’ve learned a lot from my mistakes and I felt ready this week to win.”
Reid, after a stellar career as an amateur, had been knocking on the door since her first full season as a professional in 2008 and had finished second four times, having twice squandered leads going into the final round.
She denied feeling any pressure from other’s expectations. “Obviously I’m aware of it but it’s more the pressure that I put on myself,” she said. “Now I know that even when I don’t play well on the back nine, I can still pull off shots, even when the pressure’s on. It’s just a fantastic feeling. It’s great to feel that I can win, even without an A game. I don’t feel like I played flawless golf so I think it’s going to give me the confidence to keep winning and winning and winning.”
Reid took a two-shot lead into the final round and made a flying start with a birdie at the tough, par three second hole, which has an island green. She split the fairways with her drives and found all the greens before going on to post a second birdie at the par-four eighth-hole, opening up a four shot lead.
That margin was cut to two after she dropped shots at the 10th and 12th holes and Tinning had birdied the 12th.
After she three putted the long 15th, she held a slim one shot advantage over Boeljon, who then dropped a shot at the par-four 17th.
Reid played a great recovery shot from a cart path next to the 17th green to save par and almost holed her chip shot. “I kind of thrive on shots like that. I actually thought I’d hit the second shot better than I did. I cut it a little bit. That’s why I love the game: because you get shots like that. Lee just reassured what I needed to do and I did it,” she said.
“We were going to chip with a nine iron but decided on eight-iron and caught it absolutely perfectly. It was a bit unlucky not to go in really.”
She then sealed the win with a par on the water lined 18th hole. It was Reid’s first time working with caddie Lee Griffiths and she added: “He got better during the week. He got to know me. Hopefully it’s going to be a great relationship between us and we can win many tournaments together.”
Joint runner-up spot for Boeljon was her best finish in two seasons on the LET. Meanwhile Becky Brewerton (76) shared fourth place on one over with Mollie Fankhauser from the United States (73).
Germany’s Caroline Masson (74) and Florentyna Parker (74) shared fourth place on two over, while two strokes back in joint eighth spot were Monica Christiansen (72), Sophie Sandolo (73), Jade Schaeffer (74), Hazel Kavanagh (75), Ursula Wikstrom (75), and Laura Davies (77).
SCOTSWATCH. Dunblane's Lynn Kenny (Archerfield Links) was the top Scot with a joint 14th place finish on five-over-par 224 after rounds of 76, 77 and 71. Vikki Laing from Musselburgh, recovering well from a disappointing first day, finished on 226 with scores of 80, 74 and 72
Teenage rookie Carly Booth from Comrie, the top Scot after an opening 73, slid back with subsequent scores of 78 and 76 for 227 but the former Curtis Cup player is making the cuts in her first few events as a professional and that augurs well for the future.

LORETTO GIRL RUNNER-UP
-
IN GERMAN WOMEN'S

AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Loretto Golf Academy's 14-year-old pupil Julie Yang lost a one-stroke lead over the final round to finish one-shot behind the winner, French ace Lucie Andre, in the German women's open amateur golf championship at Dusseldorf Golf Club today.
South Korean-born Julie, pictured above, was the youngest-ever winner of the Welsh women's open amateur stroke-play championship at Southerdown the previous weekend and she had seemed on her way to another momentous victory after rounds of 73, 70 and 67 had her leading a field packed with Continental amateur stars through the first 54 holes.
But, having amassed 11 birdies in her first three rounds, Julie, whose parents brought her over from Phoenix, Arizona to enrol at the Musselburgh establishment last September, could not notch a single sub-par figure over her final 18 holes. She had 17 pars and a bogey at the par-4 14th in closing with a one-over-par 72 for a two-under-par total of 282.
Andre, top-ranked female amateur by the European Golf Association last year, had scores of 73, 72, 66 and 70 for a winning total of 281.
Charley Hull, 14-year-old Kettering prodigy and winner of The Leveret Trophy and Hampshire Rose women's open tournaments alread this season, was in third place with a round to go but finished joint fifth on 289 after rounds of 73, 73, 70 and 73. She had a double bogey 5 at the short 13th in her closing round after a double bogey 7 at the long third in her second round.
Majorca-based Scot Lauren Mackin finished joint 58th in the field of 64 with scores of 77, 75, 83 and 74.

Ewart heading for

NCAA Championshis

Team-mates from the GB&I Curtis Cup squad of 2008, Scotland's Sally Watson and England's Jodi Ewart are heading with their universities to the climax of the American women's college season - the NCAA Women's Championships at Country Club of Landfall, Wilmington in North Carolina.
For Sally it will cap a very good freshman year at Stanford University at Palo Alto, California before she plays in this year's Curtis Cup match against the Americans at Essex County Club, Massachusetts in June.
For Yorkshire girl Jodi, pictured above, it will ring down the curtain on a highly successful four years at the University of Mexico, Albuquerque where she has set college records and won individual conference titles. Ewart is turning pro as soon as her university career is over, having told the Ladies Golf Union that she should not be considered for selection for the Curtis Cup match. She will go straight on to the Futures Tour.
Sally Watson, pictured above left, finished joint seventh - ahead of two members of the United States team - in a field of 122 players for the NCAA Division 1 Women's West Regional Championship over her "home" course at Stanford University. She had rounds of 75, 71 and 73 - typical, very steady rounds by the Scot for a six-over-par total of 219.
Fellow Scot Roseanne Niven from Crieff, coming up to the end of her four years at the University of California-Berkeley and winner of the British women's open amateur stroke-play championship in 2008, finished joint 66th on 232 with scores of 74, 76 and 82.
There was a tie - no play-off - for the individual honours between Calle Nelson (Virginia) (72-71-71) and Madeleine Ziegert (San Jose State) (67-74-73) on 214 over a par-71 course of 6,115yd.
Arizona headed the eight qualifiers for the NCAA Women's championships from a field of 24 teams with a total of 876. UCLA (885) were second. Next came Alabama and Texas (890), Virginia (894) and Stanford (895). California (11th on 907) did not make it.
Jodi Ewart finished joint eighth on 228 with scores of 72, 77 and 79 in the NCAA Division 1 Women's Central Region Championship at Otter Creek Golf Club, Columbus, Indiania where they were playing over a par-72 course of 6,417yd.
Martina Gavier (Kent State) was the individual winner with scores of 72, 75 and 72 for 219 - two shots ahead of Lizette Salas (Southern California) (75-71-75).
Ellie Givens (Denver University) from Darlington finished joint 22nd on 233 with scores of 79, 75 and 79. Team-mate Sarah Faller from Ireland came joint 73rd in the field of 123 players with scores of 81, 81 and 82.
Andrea Downer (Murray State) from Bramley, Surrey finished joint 85th on 249 with scores of 81, 84 and 84.
