Lesley (14) becomes Borders'

youngest county champion

Minto’s Lesley Atkins, only 14 years old, became the youngest winner of the Borders’ women’s county golf championship at The Roxburgh Golf Club, Kelso today.
Lesley beat senior international player Liz Campbell (Torwoodlee) by 4 and 3 in a final which was tighter and more evenly contested than the score suggests.
Emma Fairnie was the previous youngest county champion when she triumphed in 2004 at the age of 16.
Lesley was one up at the turn after being bunkered at the first turn to go one down but winning three of the next seven holes to go two up, then losing the ninth.
Liz’s short game kept her in with a chance against her younger opponent’s better long game.
Birdies at the short 13th and the long 14th where she put her third shot to within 12 inches of the hole, put Lesley in command with a three-hole lead and she a par 3 at the short 15th was enough to seal a 4 and 3 victory.
Today's results:
Semi-finals – Lesley Atkins (Minto) bt Sheila Cuthbertson (Peebles) 5 and 3, Liz Campbell (Torwoodlee) bt Isla Craigie (Torwoodlee) at 19th.
Final – Atkins bt Campbell 4 and 3.
BRONZE CHAMPIONSHIP
Semi-finals
– Wendy Underhill (Hawick) bt Jean Thomas (Kelso) at 19t, Margaret Fleming (Peebles) bt Diane Keddie (Peebles) 6 and 4.
Final – Fleming bt Underhill 3 and 2.

Pamela Pretswell wins West

title ... now for the Scottish

Bothwell Castle’s Pamela Pretswell lived up to her rating as the backmarker in the West of Scotland women’s amateur championship at Prestwick today.
The +2 player, whose victory last summer in the Swiss women’s open amateur title put her into the GB&I short leet for the Vagliano Trophy match in Hamburg in July, won over the Prestwick links by four strokes with a pair of 74s, against the CSS of 76 and 77, for a total of 148 in very windy and cold but mainly dry weather.
With no university exams clashing this year, Pamela will make her debut this month in the Scottish women's championship at Southerness ... and on this form she must be one of the favourites.
Runner-up for the West title on 152 with scores of 79 and 73 was former Scotland international Sara Bishop (Windyhill).
Pretswell, Susan Wood and Lesley Lloyd won the County Shield for Lanarkshire, while Renfrewshire (Eilidh Briggs, Alyson McKechin and Natasha Qayum) won the new Junior County Shield, presented by the West Association.

in Angus county championship at Montrose

Scotland women’s veteran team-mates Kathleen Sutherland (Royal Montrose) and Heather Anderson (Alyth), first and second seeds in the Angus women’s county championship golf draw, both made it through to next Sunday's semi finals at Montrose today (Sunday).
They are joined by last year's Angus order of merit winner Jackie Brown and 15 year old Ailsa Summers, daughter of former international Mary.

Ailsa survived the toughest game of the first round, beating fellow Carnoustie Ladies player Fiona Blair at the 19th, before beating Montrose member, Jane Grubb in the round of the last eight.
Jane had earlier beaten defending champion Rebecca Wilson (Monifieth) in the first round.
Jackie Brown knocked out Monifieth clubmate Aileen Hunter in the morning quarter-finals before beating Panmure Barry's Susan Arbuckle in the afternoon while former Downfield player Heather Anderson conquered Ann Hay (Edzell) in the morning and then beat Fiona Gilbert (Carnoustie Ladies) in another real tussle in the afternoon.

Sara Thomson beats Sammy
Leslie in great Peterhead
final despite wind

Aberdeen exile Sara Thomson returned from Edinburgh to win the Aberdeenshire women's county golf championship for the first time at windswept Peterhead today.
In the final, former Murcar Links player now a Royal Musselburgh member, Sara, 23, beat 17-year-old Sammy Leslie (Westhill) by one hole in a great match in very testing conditions on the exposed links.
After a match-play programme of upset form results, all four semi-finalists had a chance of winning the title for the first time.
Leslie, the No 8 qualifier, knocked out the top seed, Lynne Terry (Cruden Bay) by 2 and 1 in the first round. Thomson eliminated the four times champion and No 2 seed Sheena Wood (Aberdeen Ladies), at the 19th, also in the first round.

Claire Hargan overpowers young Gabrielle

MacDonald for sixth Midlothian title

Claire Hargan (Mortonhall), 32-year-old former Scotland international player, today won the Midlothian women's county championship for the sixth time in the past seven years. She was beaten by Rachael Livingstone in last year's final after chalking up five wins in a row.
At Newbattle Golf Club today, Claire, the No 6 qualifier, beat 16-year-old Gabrielle MacDonald (Craigielaw) by 3 and 2 in the final.
Gabrielle, the No 8 seed, could hardly have asked for a better start in the final. She was three up after only four holes on her very experienced opponent.
Then her fortunes changed quickly. Claire won the next five holes in a row to be in the driving seat at two up at the turn. Gabrielle kept pegging away but could not win back the initiative and Claire clinched the championship on 16th green.
In the morning semi-finals, Gabrielle won by two holes against Karen Marshall (Baberton) while Claire beat the No 2 seed, Mortonhall clubmate young Rachael Watton by 4 and 3.

"It's nice to be champion again, especially with some many young whippersnappers on the scene these days," said Hargan. "I didn't get off to the best of starts in the final but I had a few birdies in the middle of the round. I played solid in the semi-final and was able to take advantage of the fact that Rachael wasn't in top form."
The B Championship was won by youngster Hannah Scott (Broomieknowe) who beat Susan Dalrymple (Craigielaw) 4 and 2 in the final.
Today's results:
Semi-finals - Gabrielle MacDonald (Craigielaw) bt Karen Marshall (Baberton) 2 holes, Claire Hargan (Mortonhall) bt Rachael Watton (Mortonhall) 4 and 3.

Strong finish by Danielle McVeigh

wins her the Welsh open title

Northern Ireland challenger Danielle McVeigh (Royal Co Down) finished strongly the previous Sunday to take fifth place in the Helen Holm Scottish women’s open amateur stroke-play golf championship at Troon.
Today, Danielle’s powerful finish carried her through to victory in the Welsh women’s open amateur stroke-play championship in tough conditions at the so-demanding par-75 (for women) Royal Porthcawl links in South Wales.
A former world universities women’s champion in Thailand, Danielle, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, also gained experience on the US college circuit for a couple of years, so her two latest performances will put her strongly in the running for a place in the nine-man GB&I team for the Vagliano Trophy match against the Continent of Europe at Hamburg in July.
McVeigh started the final round in fourth place, two shots behind the three joint leaders, Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle), Rachel Jennings (Izaak Walton) and Tara Davies (Holyhead).
The 6ft+ Ulster player overtook them with a closing round of two-under-par 73 for two-under-par total of 223. Her strength enabled her to get home in two at most of the long holes and she was able to get an eagle 3 at the long ninth and birdies at the long fifth, the long 15th and the long 16th. Just to show her dexterity, she also had a birdie 2 at the short 16th. Her only blemish on the final day was a bogey at the last hole.
But, by that time, McVeigh had the tournament won, finishing up a shot ahead of Rachel Jennings who closed with a 76 – birdieing the three long finishing holes, the 15th, 16th, and 17th, for a 76 and 224.
Teenager Tara Davies, who also played well in the “Helen Holm,” sagged with three double bogeys to an 80 for 228 but managed to hold on to third place.
Kylie Walker had a final round she will want to forget in a hurry. An 84 for 232 saw her drop down to a tie for sixth place. The Buchanan Castle player double bogeyed both the first and third but got two of the shots back with birdies at the short fourth and the long fifth before bogeying the ninth to turn in three-over-par 40.
Then can disaster with a capital “D” – a quadruple bogey 8 at the 10th. Kyle did birdie the long 15th but then lurched off track again with a double bogey 7 at the long 17th and a bogey at the 18th for 44 shots home.
Carly Booth (Comrie finished joint 12th with a closing 81 for 234.
Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar), runner-up in the “Helen Holm,” also struggled in the last round with an 81 for 236 and 17th place.
Laura Murray (Alford) finished with an 83 for 242 and a share of 26th place.
Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm) had an 83 for joint 29th place on 243.

FUTURES TOUR REPORT

Irish exile Alison Walshe leads

Texas Hill Country Classic

Born in Galway, Ireland, brought up in Boston, America, a Curtis Cup cap for the United States at the Old Course, St Andrews last year ... now rookie professional Alison Walshe of Westford, Massachusetts has taken the lead after 36 holes of the inaugural $125,000 Texas Hill Country Classic at San Antonio.
Walshe, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency at last year's Curtis Cup match, carded a bogey-free score of 66 to take the lead at 139 (-5).
"I'm happy," said Walsh, who also recorded the day's low score of six-under-par 66. "I finally putted well. I believe in professional golf, it's a putting contest. Whoever putts best, scores."
Walshe credits the tournament course, The Dominion Country Club, for some of her success on Saturday.
"The course is in great shape," said Walsh. "The greens are so pure. If you don't go where you want to go, it's your fault."
The greens did go her way as she recorded six birdies, three coming early in her round.
"The early birdies (on holes 2, 3 and 4) really got the momentum going for me," recalled Walsh, who also birdied holes 13, 14 and 16, the last of which she said she made a 40-foot "bomb."
Walshe, who missed her first cut of the season at last week's Historic Brownsville Open, credits her ability to move on after having survived Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Walshe was a student at Tulane University in New Orleans when the storm struck and was relocated with the golf team to Southern Methodist University in Dallas. She then moved on to the University of Arizona, where she finished her collegiate career.
"You have to turn it into a positive and not fret over missing a cut," said Walshe. "After Katrina, I moved around a lot, which is very similar to being on tour. I learned to get along with all types of people and it's made me stronger."
Ending the day in a four-way tie for second at four-under-par (140) were Lindsey Bergeon (71) of Sarasota, Florida, Alison Hanna-Williams (71) of Portland, Oregon, Angela Buzminski (67) of Oshawa, Ontario in Canada and Jennifer Ackerson (70) of Dallas.
Rookie Bergeon, who was in a six-way tie for the lead going into Saturday's rounds, surprised herself by playing so well so soon in the season and to be in contention for the win.
"I haven't been in this situation before on the tour," said Bergeon, who played collegiately at Florida Southern College. "I played really solid today, despite a double bogey on 18. But it's not going to leave a bad taste in my mouth, as I did really well on the other 17 holes."
In addition to the double bogey, Bergeon birdied holes 8, 9, 16 and 17 and recorded one bogey on number 10.
Hanna-Williams, who was also tied for the lead coming into Saturday's play, likes where she stands.
"I want to be close," said Hanna-Williams, who is a current member of the LPGA Tour. "I hit a lot of good shots and I'm glad I'm in a position to play well tomorrow."
Hanna-Williams scored three birdies on holes 6, 11 and 17 and had one bogey on hole 7, on which she said she chose the wrong club.
"I chose a club I had to be perfect with," recalled Hanna-Williams. "And I wasn't. So I said 'no more of that.'"
Current Duramed FUTURES Tour money list leader, Buzminski put Friday's rounds behind her and it paid off.
"Yesterday I was really sloppy," said Buzminski, a five-time Tour winner who won last week in Brownsville, Texas. "I wasn't very focused. Today I focused more and I was ok."
Five birdies in a bogey-free round highlighted Buzminski's scorecard.
Fourth-year Duramed FUTURES Tour player Ackerson ended the day with three birdies on holes 6, 11 and 18 with one bogey on hole 17.
Tied for sixth at three-under-par at 141 are Sofie Andersson (72) of Angelholm, Sweden, and Gina Umeck (70) of Redlands, California.
Seven players are tiedItalic at one-under-par at 143, with another seven players tied at even-par (144).
Seventy-five players made the 36-hole cut at 150 (+6).
Twenty-one players currently stand at even-par 144 or lower in the first two rounds.
Weather: Partly cloudy with winds from the SSE at 15 to 25 mph. High in the low 90s.
