Rachel Watton beats Gabrielle

Macdonald in final of East

girls' championship

Rachael Watton of Mortonhall, won the East of Scotland girls' championship at Craigmillar Park Golf Club today.
She beat Gabrielle Macdonald of Craigielaw by 4 and 3 in the final.
To reach the final, Rachael beat Nicola Taylor of Thornton by two holes and Gabrielle beat Gillian Simpson of Murrayfield at the 19th.
The conditions the girls had to play in all day could not have been any worse. It never stopped raining. The standard of golf was excellent throughout the final in spite of the heavy rain and very wet conditions underfoot.
Gabrielle won the first but Rachael got back on level terms with a birdie at the second. Rachael edged ahead by winning the fourth and fifth holes but Gabrielle had a birdie at the eighth to reduce the deficit to one hole.
Rachael went two up again with a birdie at the 10th and then three ahead at the short 11th.
The next two holes were halved. Gabrielle lost the 14th after trouble off the tee which meant a penalty shot and she eventually conceded the hole for Rachael to go four up.
At the par 3 15th both girls had excellent tee shots over the burn to the green. Rachael secured her title-clinching par, Gabrielle just missing a birdie 2.

Kelsey and Carly win Belgian girls' team title

Scotland's pair of champion girl golfers, Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar) and Carly Booth (Comrie) won the girls' team trophy at the Belgian junior international tournament at the Royal Golf Club of Belgium.
Kelsey, the Scottish Under-21 title-holder, and Carly, the Scottish Under-18 champion and Curtis Cup player, finished joint second and joint fifth individually but their totals, added together, won the girls' team trophy with a score of 593, one shot ahead of Spain (594) with Wales (600) third and Ireland (602) fourth.
Kelsey had scores of 74, 73, 73 and 76 for a total of 296 - six shots behind the winner, Ana Fernandez de Mesa (Spain). It was the third year in a row that Kelsey had finished in the top three of this tournament. How's that for consistency? And she also figured in the capture of the team trophy for Scotland last year when it was organised under a boys and girls' combined format.
Carly Booth dropped out of the lead with two disappointing closing rounds and finished joint fifth on 297 with scores of 73, 69, 78 and 77.
Apart from a team trophy replica, Carly did have another award to take home. She won the girls' long-driving on the eve of the competition.
In the boys' section, Aberdeen's David Law (Hazlehead) clinched a share of eighth place with his second round of par-matching 72. He had four birdies and a double bogey in his last round. David finished on 293.
The other Scottish boy in the tournament, Paul Shields (Kirkhill) finished with a 77 for a share of 24th place on 299.
Ireland's Rory McNamara, leader after three rounds, slumped to a closing 77 for one-over-par 289 and finished one shot behind the winner, Joachim Hansen (Denmark).
Ireland did win the boys' team event by five shots. Scotland finished fourth
