SLGA NAME TEAMS FOR HOME INTERNATIONALS,
WOMEN'S WORLD AMATEUR TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

The Scottish Ladies Golfing Association has named the following teams:

Women's Home Internationals, Wrexham GC, September 10-12:
Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm)
Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar)
Laura Murray (Alford)
Emily Ogilvy (Auchterarder)
Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle)
Michele Thomson (McDonald Ellon)
Kylie Walker (Bothwell Castle)
Sally Watson (Elie & Earlsferry Ladies).
Team captain
Lesley Nicholson (Haddington)
Reserves:
Louise Kenney (Pitreavie)
Jane Turner (Craigielaw)
Rachael Livingstone (Musselburgh)
Rebecca Wilson (Monifieth).

World women's amateur team championship, Espirito Santo Trophy, Grange GC, Adelaide, Australia, October 8-11:

Krystle Caithness (St Regulus)
Roseanne Niven (Crieff)
Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle).
Reserves:
Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle)
Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar).

(Uninformed) comments from Colin Farquharson:

The SLGA do not issue notes alongwith their team selections so we have to presume certain things, such as the Scots at universities in America, i.e. Roseanne Niven and Krystle Caithness are not being released by their colleges for the Women's Home Internationals, which don't mean much in the States, but they (the US universities) do recognise the worldwide prestige and importance of the Espirito Santo Trophy, so that all US-based students who are good enough to be selected are released to play for their home countries in that tournament in Australia.
Carly Booth is not in the Scotland team for the WHI because that week she - and Ireland's Maguire twins plus Kelly Tidy (England) - will be playing for Europe in the Junior Ryder Cup match in Kentucky.
There are two changes in the Scotland team for Wrexham compared with last year's WHI at Dunbar. Jenna Wilson has since turned professional and Carly Booth, as stated, is unavailable. Their places are filled by Kylie Walker, who has had such a great season, and Curtis Cup player Sally Watson who has not played competitively since she had a knee operation on Wednesday, June 4, immediately after the match against the United States over the Old Course, St Andrews.

ENNIS TO DEFEND TITLE

PRESS RELEASE ISSUE BY IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
The five District Champions Ennis, Kilkenny, Roscommon, Royal Portrush and The Island join this year’s back-door graduates Douglas, Slieve Russell and Woodbrook in the Irish quarter-finals of the 2008 Suzuki Senior Cup at Galway Golf Club on Friday (August 29).
Favourites Ennis will look to the experience of Tricia McDonnell to claim back-to-back victories for the Clare side having won the title for the first time last year at Milltown. Youngsters Sarah Cunningham and Ciara Pender are once again in action but will need to be in top form to see off a feisty Kilkenny who will be ably led by double-nineties Irish champion Eileen Rose Power and youngsters Rebecca Muholland and Sinead Slater.
The talented Maguire sisters, Leona and Lisa, will fly the flag for Slieve Russell as they take on Eastern District Champions The Island. Teenagers Sarah Carty and Rachel Cassidy should prove a stern test for the twins while double girls champion Suzy Sheehan, albeit 24 years ago, makes a welcome return to competitive play having re-joined the amateur ranks earlier this year.
Past Internationals Eavan Higgins and Kate MacCann lead twelve times champions Douglas into battle with an unknown quantity in Roscommon who field Connacht champion and past Girl International Anne McCormack and the talented Ailbhe Farrell in their ranks.
The final tie sees second favourites and 22 times champions Royal Portrush, led by past International Helen Jones, who will field the in-form Gemma Hegarty and Lucy Simpson.
The northern side should prove too strong for the talented Sue Phillips and her Woodbrook teammates who have only previously once succeeded at this level in 1969.
All four quarter-finals take place on Friday with the semi-finalists lining up Saturday morning at 8am. Whatever the outcome, Saturday is sure to see a feast of competitive golf for the ILGU’s blue-ribboned Senior Cup as the cream of elite club golf convene at Galway for the weekend.

Kylie, Gemma and Lauren off to
Austria for Euro championship

Three Scots - Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle), Gemma Webster (HiltonAdd Image Park) and Majorca-based Lauren Mackin - are among the 120 entries for the European women's individual amateur golf championship over 72 holes at Schloss Schonburn Golf Club, Austria from Wednesday to Saturday this week.
All three played in the British women's open amateur stroke-play championship at Malone Golf Club, near Belfast last week when Kylie lost to Roseanne Niven (Crieff) in a play-off for the title.
Germany (25) have the most entries followed by host nation Austria (20) and France (19).
Spain's six include former British women's open amateur champion Carlota Ciganda who lost in a title play-off to Caroline Hedwall (Sweden) last year after winning the championship in 2004 when she was only 14 years of age.
Neither of the Hedwall twins, Caroline and Jacqueline, is among the Swedish entries, presumably because both are enrolling for the first time at different American universities this month.
There are no Irish entries but eight from England and four from Wales.

ENTRIES INCLUDE:

SCOTLAND
Lauren Mackin (Majorca).
Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle).
Gemma Webster (Hilton Park).
ENGLAND

Florentyna Parker (Royal Birkdale)
Rachel Jennings (Izaak Walton).

Catriona's sixth place in Safeway
Classic earns her $42,842

Catriona Matthew finished joint sixth in the weekend LPGA Tour's Safeway Classic won by American Cristie Kerr after a three-way play-off with Sofie Gustafsson and Helen Alfredsson.
Catriona earned $43,842 boosting her season's tour earnings to $344,202, which puts her 45th in the money table.
Janice Moodie tied for 36th place in the Safeway Classic, earning $9,052 and giving her a season's running total of $157,010 (62nd place).
Mhairi McKay did not survive the cut and did not add to her season's earnings of $75,019 (104th place).

EQUALITY OF SEXES NOTE:
Catriona Matthew finishes joint sixth in the LPGA Tour's Safeway Classic and earns $43,842.
Meanwhile, elsewhere in America on Sunday, fellow Scot Martin Laird finishes joint seventh in The Barclays Championship and collects a pay cheque for $203,700.
Maybe that's why Michele Wie has a thing about playing in men's events - the rate of pay is so much higher!
